William Morris (1834-1896)
William Morris, graphic designer, writer and typographer, born in Walthamstow, studied at Oxford with the intention of becoming a clergyman yet was pursuaded by Rossetti to turn to the arts.
William Morris was famous as the founder of the Arts and Crafts Movement. Morris was best known for his Wallpaper designs, incorporating plants, flowers and birds as pictured above. A great influence to the graphic design industry, techniques in his wallpaper designs and images of natural complex designs are still seen in contemporary work, even in web design.
William Morris united the creative side of art and design seamlessly with the practical side of printing, typography and production technologies.
